About Us

The Art Technology Research Group at Bath Spa University sits within the School of Art Film and Media.

Key Researchers

The group is currently led by Dr Charlie Tweed and Sam Wilkins, with Claire Loder and Dave Webb. Creative practices and relationships with technology vary across the group, creating a fertile space for discussion, research and  practice.

Dr Charlie Tweed

Charlie Tweed is the Subject Leader for Art, and the co-lead of Material: Art and Technology Research Group.

He is a media artist and practice based researcher who lectures in digital media practice and culture. His performative, digital and video based works have drawn attention to the complex impacts of computational capitalism in terms of resource extraction, ecological destruction and the deployment of digital technologies to manage populations and environment. In his work he employs strategies of re-appropriation and speculative fiction, often taking on personas of anonymous collectives and hybrid machines, to outline subversive plans for enhancing and escaping control mechanisms and renegotiating relations with the non-human.

He currently leads modules in single camera drama and documentary offering experiential practical production at level 4. He also runs two digital effects modules at level 5 offering practice based animation, motion graphics and visual effects.

Sam’s ongoing research project explores the intermedial links between painting and moving image, combining historical painting and visual effects to make new media work for exhibition. He has particular interests in paintings and new media work which explore the landscape and the concept of the pastoral.

Founder of ‘Blooming Whiteway’, an ongoing socially engaged project in Bath, Claire is also combining creative expertise with horticulture and community.

Dave Webb
